IAC (ES)

Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (La Laguna, Spain)

Everything about astrophysics, from fundamental research to technology and education

The IAC is the most important research centre in astrophysics in Spain; a Severo Ochoa Excellence Research Centre since 2011. The IAC has 3 main Divisions - Research, Technology and Graduate Education Divisions. The IAC intensify international cooperation and exploitation of an exceptional set of ground/space observational facilities to achieve leadership in 6 key areas of astrophysics: Solar Physics, Exoplanetary Systems and Solar System, Stellar and Interstellar Physics, The Milky Way and the Local Group, Formation and Evolution of Galaxies and Cosmology and Astroparticles. About 380 people form the IAC staff, with more than 200 positions dedicated to research (permanent researchers, post-docs and PhD students), about 50 positions are high level engineers, and the rest provide technical and administrative support. The IAC scientists play leading roles in large number of research and policy groups, boards, and committees, within Europe and elsewhere. IAC researchers are involved in a large series of international research collaborations. These include large science teams involved in joint operations or development of facilities (such as the COROT, Herschel, Planck and Euclid satellites, the IMAX experiment, and many telescope and instrument science teams including the VLT, E-ELT, EST and GTC).
