Chemical Elements as Tracers of the Evolution of the Cosmos

MPG - MPIA (DE)

Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Max Planck Institute for Astronomy (Germany)

Max-Planck-Gesellschaft (MPG) is represented by the Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie (MPIA), Heidelberg, Germany.

Max Planck Institute for Astronomy Heidelberg (MPIA) is part of the Max Planck Society (Gesellschaft; MPG) and is a vibrant institute with more than 150 scientists, staff, postdocs, and students working on a broad range of topics either in the `Planet and Star formation’ or the `Galaxies and cosmology’ department. MPIA hosts several independent research groups focussing on stellar populations or largescale structure formation. It also hosts a research group dedicated to exploit and analyse data from the Gaia mission. In-house we have an active outreach department (Centre for Astronomy Education and Outreach), which in 2019 was selected as the new Office of Astronomy for Education by the International Astronomical Union. Finally, a lab for building cutting-edge observational instruments is located at MPIA.

Activities

  • Galaxy formation, evolution and galactic chemical evolution
  • stars and planets
  • stellar atmospheres and spectroscopy
  • building instruments (for telescopes)
    • Gaia - one of the main working groups is located at MPIA

At MPIA stellar physics and atmospheres are studied in great detail both in 1D, LTE but also 3D and NLTE. This helps us provide better abundances for comparing to yields but also just to explore the chemical evolution and the nucleosynthetic processes enriching the early universe.
