In the Physics Department of the Università degli Studi di Milano (Milano University-UNIMI) a group working in nuclear astrophysics is active since 1998. The group is part of the LUNA collaboration, working in the Underground low background laboratory of Gran Sasso in Italy. From 2009 to 2015 a member of the group (Alessandra Guglielmetti) has served as spokesperson of the LUNA collaboration. Alessandra Guglielmetti is also the Principal Investigator of a special project (Progetto Premiale) funded by the Italian Research Ministry in 2011 and 2012 to build the LUNA MV facility at Gran Sasso. Such facility is equipped with a 3.5 MV accelerator, which can deliver intense proton, alpha and carbon beams.
