Chemical Elements as Tracers of the Evolution of the Cosmos

The ELBE 40 MeV superconducting electron accelerator provides beams of bremsstrahlung for nuclear resonance fluorescence and photoactivation, neutron time-of-flight facility, and other secondary beams as well as direct electron beam.


The ELBE (Electron Linear accelerator with high Brilliance and low Emittance) accelerator drives many secondary radiations and can be used based on scientific proposals evaluated every six months by an independent scientific advisory board. Main features include:

  • Bremsstrahlung beams with end point up to 18 MeV, partially polarised bremsstrahlung possible.
  • Photoactivation setup with pneumatic delivery system.
  • Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence setup with four Compton suppressed high-purity germanium detectors and deuterium breakup setup for determination of the bremsstrahlung endpoint energy
  • neutron time-of-flight beam with 0.1-10 MeV neutron energy
