GUF - FRANZ (DE)
Frankfurt Neutron Source (Frankfurt, Germany)
Summary
Neutrons in the astrophysically interesting keV-regime can be produced via the 7Li(p,n) reaction at the Goethe University Frankfurt.
Description
Neutrons in the astrophysically interesting keV-regime can be produced via the 7Li(p,n) reaction at the Goethe University Frankfurt. Currently a Van-de-Graaff accelerator is used to irradiate metallic lithium layers with energies up to 2.5 MeV and currents of up to 20 uA. This results in neutron energies between 1 keV and about 1 MeV.
In the future, also a RFQ-IH-based high-current accelerator will be available. This accelerator will have a limited energy range of 1.8-2.2 MeV but allows proton-current of up to 50 mA. The corresponding neutron energies range between 1 keV and about 500 keV.
